Helfer was raised in the rural area of Donalda, Alberta, Canada and was the daughter of Dennis Helfer and Elaine Helfer. Her parents are of German, English, Swedish and Norwegian heritage. She went to William E. Hay Composite High School located in Stettler. Together with the help of her sisters Trena Tammy Tara She lived in the grain farm of their family. A modeling agency scout discovered Helfer at the age of 17, while standing in line to see a film.
